About

View across Loch Indaal from the sitting room

On the shore of Loch Indaal at the edge of Bowmore, this self-catering cottage is a short walk from Bowmore’s shops, distillery, restaurants and swimming pool. Originally a stone fisherman’s cottage, Taobh-na-Mara has been renovated and extended to make the perfect base to explore the beautiful Isle of Islay and enjoy its scenery, wildlife and whisky.

The sitting room offers views over the Loch to Bruichladdich, and across to the Paps of Jura (see more views around the cottage here). Many species of birds, the occasional seal and, if lucky, otters can all be seen from a comfortable chair.

Between October and March, Islay is home to about 35,000 Barnacle Geese, large skeins returning to roost at the head of the Loch each evening offer spectacular views. Elsewhere on Islay, seals and red deer are commonly spotted, and sometimes eagles, dolphins and even basking sharks. Find out more about wildlife on Islay here.

All eight distilleries on Islay, and one on Jura, run tours and tastings, and sea and fly-fishing are both readily available.

Accommodation comprises one double and one twin bedded room. The recently refurbished bathroom and kitchen offer modern appliances and comfort, including electric shower and washer drier. There is colour TV, although with the views across the Loch it’s unlikely you’ll want to turn it on!
All heating and lighting costs are included, along with bed linen, duvets and towels. But please bring your own for swimming and the beach.

Unfortunately, we do not accommodate dogs and other pets.

Prices range from £450 to a maximum of £950 per week.
